Description

Have you ever visited the home of your ancestor?

Finding it is like discovering a forgotten world. Often they are tucked away in the forest. Only an opening remains. Perhaps a pile of rocks is left from a fireplace.

And sometimes you find a cottage. The actual house where your ancestor was born, grew up and lived their life.

You get to peak into the window and open the door. What will you find?

Most of our ancestors lived hard lives. Illness was detrimental and scarcity was the norm. Even so, we can find traces of beauty. Like the roses growing in the ruins of a settlement, reminding us that there was room for more than survival.

The records are full of these traces. There are signs of families and friends pulling together and helping each other.

You can find them, if you want. The documents from births, moves, marriages, and much more.

You get to discover everything in the records. Where will you go?

This could be the start of getting to know your Swedish ancestor. It could be the start of your journey to Sweden.

You decide.

This is for you

You already have some experience with genealogy and want to work on your Swedish family history.

You use Ancestry World Explorer, Ancestry All Access, or ArkivDigital and read each record before adding it to your tree.

You want personal feedback and guidance in your research, directly related to your family history.

From Annika’s desk

Hej, I’m Annika. I’m a professional genealogist and the owner of Find a Swede. My goal is for you to find your Swedish roots.

You probably already know that there are no guarantees in family history. I can not promise that you will find your ancestor. But the records in Sweden are vast. Most of what you need is online.

I’m thrilled to open this new program. I’ve created Find a Swede so that you can get the most out of the records. It gives you structure, context and translations, so that you can get to know your ancestor.

Review of Find a Swede

"If you like to participate in searching for your Swedish ancestors then Find a Swede is for you. Due to the unique structure of Swedish records expert help is very useful. The possibility of getting that professional advice & guidance in a structured way is extremely valuable when coming across questions or difficulties in finding information."

Guides

To make sure you get the most out of the program, you have brief guides on Swedish genealogy and planning your research.

It’s your research

Find a Swede will give you direct feedback and guidance in your genealogical research, and an understanding of the context.

You decide where you want to take your research. Delve into the details of one ancestor or try to get as far back as the records reach. It’s up to you.

Using a session

Use each session to address one issue in your research.

Some examples are:

  • Find a marriage record for a couple who are identified in other records.
  • Review a research plan.
  • Translate and interpret one difficult to read hand written page.
  • A summary of your research since your last session, with a handful of questions about interpretations and available sources.

The process

You submit your questions on the website, along with any documents needed.

  • Fill out the form.
  • Add your files.
  • Press Submit.
  • Select a time slot in the calendar.
  • Your research is delivered within five working days of your session.

What’s in your report

This is in each response:

  • The reasoning and conclusions are described in detail.
  • You get copies of all records used.
  • The relevant parts of records are transcribed and translated.

Sometimes, this is in your report

Your report is adjusted to your question. At least one of your reports will have any of these:

  • A custom map of the area you’re researching.
  • Historical facts concerning your ancestor.
  • Tips on sources and record collections.
  • Help with a strategy for reaching your goal.

Access

The account for requesting a session is set up manually. Your program starts after your account is set up.

  • You have eight weeks to use your sessions.
  • Access the account for one year after the end of the program.
  • The guides are available at purchase.

What others are saying about Find a Swede

"In each session I got an exact and complete answer to my question. It was always clearly documented when an answer was given - and documented also which records were examined and found not to be productive. I was very pleased and impressed with this service."

It's time for vacation for me and my ten closest f It's time for vacation for me and my ten closest friends. I haven't decided yet if I will be on guitar or if I will pour hot beverages into a cup and gaze into the distance, while the person (reluctantly) holding the cup looks in the opposite direction. Decisions, decisions.
I'm logging off for a bit. If you want to stay in the loop, head to the Find a Swede website and sign up for my newsletter.
Happy summer! 🏖
#genealogistsofinstagram
It started with a lawn. For seven or eight years, It started with a lawn. For seven or eight years, my husband has sown, mowed, and removed organic material to create a meadow. Or recreate, because this was a pasture as early as the 17th century. The leanest of the land was for the cattle. In the late summer, the meadows in Sweden were cut one last time for hay for winter, keeping the nutrition of the soil low.
Every year new flowers appear that have lay dormant for a century. Red, yellow, blue, and white. This weekend, we counted about thirty orchids on our little patch.

Did you hear about #swedengate? It's an internet s Did you hear about #swedengate? It's an internet storm about Swedish culture. It started with a Reddit thread about strange cultural customs. Someone mentioned playing with a Swedish friend as a child. They were asked to WAIT while the friend and their family had dinner.
I can confirm. It happened to me as a kid in the 80s. Some never invited you to eat with them. Not the nicest of traditions. (But if that's the worst of Swedish culture, I'm not worried.)
The Swedish custom is defended by some. It's talked about Lutheranism and a social coldness in Northern Europe.
But the explanation from Swedish experts, is that food has been scarce. Sweden has only one harvest season. And there's a tradition of not wanting to be in debt. (I suspect those are connected.)
It's hard to grasp how much the lack of light has affected Sweden. It's is on the same latitudes as Alaska, even though the climate is milder.
Some say other regions are colder and poorer. They still love to share their food.
True, but crops depend on the sunlight. And that's scarce in Sweden.
It's said a plant needs ten hours of sunlight to grow. Here in Gothenburg, we get ten hours of daylight from mid February to mid October. That's without factoring in the cloudy days.
And that's about half of the year when food doesn't grow.
It took planning and hard work to survive. That's why Swedes ate foods that stored well. And that's why some Swedes still don't share their food. To not mess up anyone's planning and to not imply that someone is incapable of feeding their children. It may seem odd, but it could be why you were born. And Swedes offer fika, all the time.
If you want to hire a Swedish genealogist for your family history, my bookings are open until the end of June.
In July I'm on vacation like most Swedes, while the days are long. That's how we stay sane-ish up here. When in doubt, anything about Sweden can be explained by the extremes in daylight. (It's not the cold, it's never the cold.)

If you have Swedish ancestry, look no further. Here you'll find the actual Sweden, shared by an actual Swede.
Welcome! Nice to meet you! I just love the wood anemones this time of year.

Here are some of my recent favorites. They can all help you with your Swedish family history.

🌸 @riksarkivet_sverige has a database with Swedish censuses (Folkräkningar) between 1860 and 1930.
🌸 @lantmateriet just updated their site for historical maps (Historiska kartor). You can now search a larger area via the map. And the historical maps are divided between overview (översiktliga) and detailed (detaljerade).
🌸 @thecreativefamilyhistorian shares how to present your research in a structured and appealing way. Check out her Youtube channel.
